This standard will set forth actions that persons with disabilities can take to increase personal preparedness for emergencies and disasters. It will include specific actions that can be taken by those with disabilities in order to increase their chances for survival in the event of a catastrophic disaster, and it will provide guidance in how to effectively plan for such an eventuality.
As disasters become more intense, the resources normally relied upon for assistance to those with disabilities become exceedingly stressed and potentially unavailable for extended periods of time. This condition places increasing responsibility on the individual to initiate measures that will help to protect themselves and to independently survive should that become necessary. This standard guides persons with disabilities in how to effectively plan and prepare for such an event.
