ASTM WK46783

Revision of D3302 / D3302M - 12 Standard Test Method for Total Moisture in Coal

    (What is a Work Item?)

    Active Standard: D3302 / D3302M - 12

Developed by Subcommittee: D05.21 | Committee D05 | Contact Staff Manager

    WK46783

    1. Rationale

More than two years ago, D05 identified that D3302 does not properly address how to prepare a System Sample the product from a mechanical sampler. This term is now defined in D7430 and is added here to describe the output from a mechanical sampler. Since this sample is, technically, already crushed and divided, additional language is needed define how this sample should be added to the total moisture process. During the ASTM D05 meetings, a consensus of the attendees wanted an option to crush a system sample (often a 20 kg sample). Testing done by the D3302 task group showed that in some circumstances crushing before air drying removed a significant amount of moisture, and in some circumstances it had no significant effect. The testing that was done was unable to identify the specific situations that did or did not cause the moisture to be affected.
