Cooling from both tempering and stress relieving is required to be done at a rate no faster than 100 F per hour. Since the minimum tempering and stress relieving temperatures called out are above 1000 F, cooling slowly from these operations can result in embrittlement of some materials. To avoid this embrittlement rapid air or liquid cooling is typically employed. It is proposed that the cooling rate requirement for tempering and stress releiving be removed to allow manufacturers the ability to choose a cooling method best suited for the material chosen by the purchaser.
