1.1.This standard specifies ballistic range configuration for small arms and fragmentation testing of ballistic-resistant items, including, but not limited to, soft body armor, hard plates, accessories, shields, and helmets. The specification includes requirements for range geometry (e.g., dimensions, alignment, spacing), range conditions (e.g., temperature, humidity, lighting), test equipment (e.g., universal receiver, mounting, test barrels, backing assembly mounting), instrumentation (e.g., light screens, high speed cameras, radar), and measurement procedures (e.g., projectile velocity, yaw). 1.2.The purpose of this standard is to specify critical test range parameters in order to achieve consistency of test results among test ranges. 1.3.This standard does not address any of the safety concerns associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. Existing specifications for ballistic range configurations from the U.S. Army, National Institute of Justice, and test laboratories will be considered in developing the new standard.
