1.1 This specification covers cold-applied, single-component emulsified asphalt sealants for use in sealing cracks in asphalt concrete pavements. 1.2 Units--The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as the standard. 1.3 This standard does not purport to address all safety or environmental issues that might be associated with the use of this type of sealant or with the use of this standard. It is responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and to determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. Specific cautionary statements are given in Appendix XI.
Over the years, it has been the practice to use emulsified asphalt to seal pavement cracks. These asphalt sealants generally are not the ones used for the typical road surface treatments applications and, therefore, require their own specifications. To address this need, a new standard has been drafted that defines minimum requirements to set these emulsified asphalt cold-pour crack sealants apart from the emulsified asphalts used for road surface treatments. These qualify sealants are not the typical road emulsified asphalt used for surface treatment applications. Users would be government agencies, quality control laboratories, and manufacturers.
