WK46 New Specification for Manufacture of Prestressed Reinforced Concrete Three-Sided Structures for Culverts and Short-Span Bridges

Developed by Subcommittee: C13.07
See Related Work by this Subcommittee
Date Initiated: 02-07-2003

1. Scope

1.1 This specification covers the manufacturing of single-cell prestressed/pretensioned concrete
three-sided structures intended to be used for the construction of culverts and short-span bridges.
1.2 A complete metric companion to Specification C XXX has been developed - C XXXM; therefore, no metric equivalents are presented in this specification.
NOTE 1 - This specification is primarily a manufacturing and purchasing specification. The
successful performance of this product depends upon the proper selection of the structural section, bedding, backfill, and care that the installation conforms to the construction specifications. The owner of the prestressed/pretensioned concrete three-sided structure specified herein is cautioned that he must properly correlate the loading conditions and the field requirements with the structural section specified and provide for inspection at the construction site.
NOTE 2 This specification details a manufacturing and purchasing specification for a prestressed pretensioned concrete element. Since large prestressing forces may be part of the design requirements, the manufacturer is cautioned to use appropriate engineering procedures and practices to apply the initial prestressing forces to the pretensioned strands and to transfer those forces to the concrete section at release.
