Review of the C1696 standard reveals that it is currently silent on the topic of metal jacketing joint sealant. There are varying opinions in the industry on whether or not metal jacketing joint sealant should be used and at this time no definitive design advice can be given on whether metal jacketing joint sealants should be used. However, this standard should inform the reader/system designer about this issue and the pros and cons of using metal jacketing joint sealant as well as the fact that this is an unsettled part of insulation system design. Lastly, if the system designer does choose to use metal jacketing joint sealant, guidance should be given on what type of materials should be used. The proposed additions in this work item/ballot attempt to accomplish the above goals.
