    1. Scope

    Scope This test method covers the determination of the relative strength of Natural Sand, Resin Coated Sand, Ceramic and other manufactured materials used as Proppants in the hydraulic fracturing and gravel packing operations, through testing for dry crush resistance under controlled mechanical loading. The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as the standard. The values in parentheses are provided for information purposes only. Specification E11 designates the size of sieve frames with inch units as standard, but in this test method the frame size is designated in SI units exactly equivalent to the inch units. This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.

    A sample of dry natural sand, resin coated sand, ceramic and other manufactured materials of known mass is screened to remove any oversize particles or fines from a known commercial proppant size range or cut, loaded uniformly into a crush cylinder of fixed dimensions at a controlled mass per unit area, subjected to a continuous loading at a fixed rate until maximum stress is achieved, held at that maximum stress for a fixed period of time, and evaluated for amount of fines generation. This test method is used primarily to determine the relative strength of dry natural sand, resin coated sand, ceramic and other manufactured materials being considered for use as hydraulic fracturing proppants. The results are used to evaluate compliance of a given material with applicable specification requirements and to provide necessary data for control of the production of such material and acceptance for final intended use. This standard is based on API RP19C and ISO 13503-2, modified to simplify the method and address errors and minor issues. This standard describes a method to measure relative strength of natural and synthetic proppant materials in the laboratory and does not intend to correlate with field performance of natural and synthetic proppant materials in down hole field use.
