ASTM WK45772

New Practice for Measurement of Emission Characteristics of UV-A Lamps used in Fluorescent Penetrant and Magnetic Particle Testing

    (What is a Work Item?)

Developed by Subcommittee: E07.03 | Committee E07 | Contact Staff Manager

    1. Scope

This practice covers the procedures and requirements for testing the performance of UV-A lamps used in fluorescent penetrant and fluorescent magnetic particle testing. This practice includes test procedure to assess UV-A lamps emission characteristics when performance of these tests, by the producer, is specified. These tests are intended to be performed only by the manufacture to certify performance of specific lamp models (housing, filter, bulb/diode, power supply combination). This test protocol is not intended to be used by the end user.

Standard is needed to address signficant performance shortfalls in UV-A lamp technologies used for inspection of aerospace components for defects. The DoD, specifically the USAF will adopt this new standard.

fluorescent penetrant inspection; fluorescent magnetic particle inspection; tranmittance; irradiance; spectroradiometer

The title and scope are in draft form and are under development within this ASTM Committee.
