The standard will help users decide which type of passive sampler should be employed in certain air monitoring situations. Not only is geometry of sampler important, but also sorbent choice, sampling time, concentration of target species and sampling environment. A guide will help users avoid the common pitfalls associated with deployment of samplers and ensure quality results are obtained.
The standard is required as the need for passive sampling is increasing. Users do not have a guide for which type of samplers to deploy, leading to frequent misuse of them and incorrect data being reported. Standards exist for placement of these devices, how to sample with them and, their analysis, but not for chosing the right sampler. The standard would be used by government agencies, contract laboratories and industry.
