ASTM WK45520

Revision of E10 - 12 Standard Test Method for Brinell Hardness of Metallic Materials

    (What is a Work Item?)

    Active Standard: E10 - 15

Developed by Subcommittee: E28.06 | Committee E28 | Contact Staff Manager

    1. Rationale

The out-of-round requirements for a Brinell indentation given in 7.6.3 seem to only apply to an HBW 10/3000 indentation. Subcommittee E28.06 decided to propose a revision of the requirement to cover all Brinell scales by changing the maximum difference between the largest and smallest measured diameters for the same indentation from the current 0.1 mm to a maximum of 4% of the mean diameter. The value of 4% was chosen since 4% of the smallest HBW 10/3000 indentation (2.4 mm) is approximately 0.1 mm.
