To allow for optional marking on crimp rings as substitute for existing requirement to be black in color. The original intention was to help plumbers and code inspectors recognize the rings as being specifically for PEX and not for PB which used a bright copper ring. Over the last several years there has been demonstrated alternate ways to clearly mark the rings so that they still clearly identify PEX. This project is not to eliminate the black in color but to only add alternate marking option if the manufacturer so chooses. Also, I will update this fitting standard to reflect relatively recent changes to F876 and F877 whereas F876 now only is relavant to the tubing standard and reference to F877 should not be referenced when only referring to the PEX tubing.
