    1. Rationale

    Section 7.4 is part of the requirements for flatjack calibration. The calibration process includes applying pressure to a flatjack with a compression testing machine. The intent of the language is to allow for the use of compression machines with either top or bottom rams. However, the language is actually only practical for compression machines with bottom rams. This ballot proposes to modify text to allow for the use of compression machines with either top or bottom rams. A similar ballot item is proposed for the corresponding language and figure in ASTM C1196, In Situ Compressive Stress Within Solid Unit Masonry Estimated Using Flatjack Measurements.
