    1. Rationale

    Section 7.4 is part of the requirements for flatjack calibration. The calibration process includes applying pressure to a flatjack with a compression testing machine. The intent of the language is to allow for the use of compression machines with either top or bottom rams. However, the language is actually only practical for compression machines with bottom rams. This ballot proposes to modify text to allow for the use of compression machines with either top or bottom rams. Additionally, Figure 3 is intended to show this calibration procedure, but does not properly illustrate a centered flatjack. The figure also does not label the upper platen. This ballot proposes to modify the figure to properly illustrate the calibration procedure. A similar ballot item is proposed for the corresponding language and figure in ASTM C1197, In Situ Measurement of Masonry Deformability Properties Using the Flatjack Method.
