Current langauge in regards to reference standards requires that these standards be made from identical composition and thickness of the item to be qualified. This presents and undue burden on manufacturers since compostion is not the only influence on ultrasonic response and the tolerance on a thickness may vary depending upon the place of manufacture. It is proposed that the reference standards be acoustically compatible with the produciton components. Accoustically compatible is to be defined as: +/- 3 percent of the measured velocity. Propose identical thickness shall state similar thickness.
