The proposed revision is to mandate the use of an automatic fire extinguisher for auto Pensky-Martens instruments built after 1 January 2017. A comprehensive survey of ASTM members and manufacturers showed extremely strong support for this revision. The revision is for safety purposes where the sample catches fire in an auto instrument due to operator error, sample mislabelling or unknown sample testing. In these instances a fire can cause disruption in the lab and consequential accidents, peripheral damage and damage to the instrument itself.
