ASTM WK44765

Revision of E1652 - 10 Standard Specification for Magnesium Oxide and Aluminum Oxide Powder and Crushable Insulators Used in the Manufacture of Metal-Sheathed Platinum Resistance Thermometers, Base Metal Thermocouples, and Noble Metal Thermocouples

    (What is a Work Item?)

    Active Standard: E1652 - 14a

Developed by Subcommittee: E20.04 | Committee E20 | Contact Staff Manager

    1. Rationale

The recent ballot revision approved in the November 2013 cycle included revisions to Table 3, Chemical specifications for MgO Type 2 powder. The specifications were considered acceptable in the revised form, but there is an aesthetic problem because the implied limit for Silica is less than the explicitly stated limit. The maximum limit for SiO2 (or any species) is implied to be 3.0% because of the minimum MgO requirement of 97.0%. However, the table limit states 3.5%, which is a functionally moot requirement. Thanks to Grahame Pulford for the keen observation. Please contact me if you have any concerns about this adjustment, which is intended as a simple nod to arithmetic. Actual substantive changes are planned for consideration later, but should not be piggybacked with this trivial detail. kelly meares 417-529-8697
