    1. Rationale

    A user has requested addition of a new grade, 317CU, of a nominal composition of 18 Cr- 16 Ni- 4.5 Cu- 3.5 Mo. The UNS Number S31730 has been issued by the UNS Advisory Board. Request letters from a user and a data package supporting the request have been provided. The letter and the required data are appended to the ballot item. As a result of a negative on SCLB A01.10 (14-01), on the issue of patents, the following has been added to the Rationale: This alloy is patented. The Subcommittee reviewed the ballot item and the specification at its meeting of May 8, 2014, in Toronto, and found that, as the specification already provides several alternatives to the new alloy, the ASTM policy on patents is satisfied simply by the addition of the standard cautionary statement regarding use of patented materials, which appears at the end of all A01 specifications. For convenience, that paragraph is shown below, after the Summary of Changes. Except for replacing the place holder with the newly issued UNS number, no other changes to the ballot item have been made. The Subcommittee requested permission to re-ballot the item concurrently in A01.10 and A01, and Committee A01 approved that request at its meeting of May 8, 2014.
