There are applications in the marketplace that require enhanced formability for chemistry grades such as 1010 or grades with greater C & Mn levels. Since there is no current ASTM definition for this combination of formability and chemistry, steel users or buyers tend to order these grades as 1010 DS or 1020 DS, which is a bastardization and violation of a DS product. A new grade designation, Special Forming Steel (SFS), is being introduced to satisfy this market need. In order to address persuasive negatives on a prior ballot, changes have been made to the requirements and definition of SFS.
