    1. Rationale

    The current standard, Section 9.6.2.2, states the magnetic probe strength test shall be within six (6) months of the tramp metals test. It is proposed that the strength test be changed to a twelve (12) month interval. Through correspondence with the sole source supplier of the magnetic probe (Industrial Magnetics), it has been noted that the six month interval is more common to the food/grain industry for consumable products. Per the probe manufacturer, there is no actual standard or set criteria for verification of magnet strength interval. It has been suggested that a one (1) year interval, and up to five (5) years, is common practice. Additionally, this type of magnet, unless subjected to temperatures in excess of 180F, are not known to show loss of strength greater than % to 1% within a lifetime. The standard allows a tolerance of plus/minus 5%. The sixth month interval for the Engineered Wood Fiber (EWF) standard was considered to be a starting off point, and that it could be adjusted over time. In additional correspondence with Industrial Magnetics, the representative stated the change from six months to twelve months would be acceptable. FYI description of magnet from F2075 is as follows. 9.2.1 An industrial grade magnetic wand with a probe of 56 6 4 in. (1422.4 6 101.6 mm). At the end of the probe is a cylindrical 6 in. (152.4 mm) long by 1 in. (25.4 mm) diameter neodymium iron-boron rare earth magnet (40 MGO) Will also send copy of calibration procedure used in F2075 in separate email.
