    1. Scope

    Evaluating emissions of MDI from SPF insulation is important for consumer risk assessment; therefore, there is a need to accurately measure MDI during product emissions testing. The proposed standard will describe the procedures to collect emissions of methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (MDI) from spray polyurethane (SPF) insulation samples using specialized micro-scale environmental test chambers or emission cells. This standard will describe the specifications for specialized chamber(s) to minimize MDI wall adsorption and maximize recoveries during emission testing. Sampling and analytical methodology using LC/MS/MS will be covered, although the task group may opt to create a separate work item for the analytical portion if deemed appropriate by the subcommittee.

    Commonly used emission testing protocols (e.g. micro chamber, FLEC, conventional small scale chamber) have been found to be problematic for measuring MDI emissions due to adsorption to the chamber walls, resulting in significant bias. The standard can be used by SPF manufacturers to evaluate potential MDI emissions from their products.
