    1. Rationale

    For maximum thermal efficiency and reliability, performance reciprocating spark ignition aviation engines have been designed to operate on high octane aviation gasoline. To meet the necessary motor octane (MON, ASTM D2700) and supercharge (SC, ASTM D909) requirements, the octane enhancement additive tetraethyl lead (TEL) is used in ASTM D910 Grades as detailed in Section 6 and Table 1.
