Technical Contact John T. One of its goals is to phase out the use of mercury thermometers. ASTM D2318-98(2008) in Section 6.1.1 requires the use of ASTM Thermometer 96C, a mercury thermometer. By revising this standard allowing the use of non-mercury alternative thermometers, users would have the option to procure and to test alternative thermometers thus promoting the phase out of mercury thermometers.
