One of its goal is to phase out the use of mercury thermometers. ASTM D2319-98(2008)e1 in Section 5.6 requires the use of ASTM Thermometer 16C, a mercury thermometer. By revising this standard allowing the use of non-mercury alternative thermometers, users would have the option to procure and to test alternative thermometers thus promoting the phase out of mercury thermometers.
