This classification system is based on the premise that the material properties of all rubber products can be arranged into characteristic material designations. These designations are determined by types and classes as described in ASTM D 2000. For gas industry applications, materials can be further described using additional requirements herein in conjunction with ASTM D 2000.
This standard addresses natural gas industry need to have a method to additionally classify elastomers based upon performance characteristics incorporating requirements for the use of the proposed test method as referenced in WK43217 as well as ranges for specific properties as determined by specific current ASTM test methods. Research performed over several years has documented the correlation of these properties to elastomer performance in natural gas sealing applications. The resulting specification would be used by specifiers and includes linkage to ASTM D2000. It is anticipated that the resulting standard will be universally adopted by the natural gas industry when selecting and defining elastomers for use as well as quality assurance activities.
