ASTM WK43237

Work Item: ASTM WK43237 - Revision of D1322 - 12e1 Standard Test Method for Smoke Point of Kerosine and Aviation Turbine Fuel

    (What is a Work Item?)

    Active Standard: D1322 - 12e2

Developed by Subcommittee: D02.J0.03 | Committee D02 | Contact Staff Manager

    1. Rationale

Changes need to be made to correct the method issued last year, 2012. In paragraph 10.2.2 the decimal point was missing in the allowance for the pressure variation. The method was issued stating 7 kPa, whereas it should have been 0.7 kPa. In addition in paragraph 10.2.1 there is a reference to .the procedure specified in Section 12 and this is incorrect. It should state .. the procedure specified in Section 11 and the calculation specified in Section 12 . In addition there is a lack of clarity on the need in the manual method to make three individual determinations of the flame height with each measurement recorded to the nearest 0.5 mm and then averaged to give a single result. After the average value has been determined it is round to the nearest 0.1 mm then that value is used in the Calculation in Section 12 using the correction factor for the instrument determined by calibration against standard reference materials. The result from the Calculation in Section 12 is then rounded to the nearest 0.5 mm in the manual method. However, in the automatic method the flame height is measured automatically to the nearest 0.01 mm and the instrument takes three individual readings and calculates the average to the nearest 0.1 mm. It is this average reading by the automatic instrument that is then used in the equation 2 of the Calculation in Section 12 and reported to the nearest 0.1mm. There are 5 sections listing changes in this ballot described individually below. Ballot History: A revised D1322 method was issued in 2012 and contained some errors that need to be corrected. This is a revision to correct errors and clarify the test method as issued in 2012. Since these changes were deemed to be non-controversial, approval was received for a concurrent SC J and D02
