The existing language in C1552 specifies both perpendicularity and a planeness requirement for the capped specimen (Section 7.4). However, C1552 does not have a requirement that the caps be verified to ensure that they meet these requirements. Data provided by the Cement and Concrete Reference Laboratory (CCRL), indicated that improper caps were presented during inspections approximately 15% of the time. The task group feels that this represents an excessive number of faulty caps. Verification of these requirements on a regular basis ensures that the equipment used for capping continues to conform to the requirements of the Practice, and the procedure used to cap continues to be performed properly. This ballot proposes the addition of a new Section 7.7 to provide the daily verification requirements. New Note 12 is provided to help the user by providing two possible methods that have been proven to work for verifying caps as proposed in Section 7.7 of this ballot.
