    1. Rationale

    The following item for ballot is intended as an update to ASTM E647 to loosen the surface finish requirements for the compact, C(T), specimen. The task group felt that easing this requirement would reduce the machining burden while not dramatically affecting the ability to measure crack length, particularly when non-visual methodologies are being used. This proposed modification would also bring these requirements in-line with those specified in ASTM E399 for this specimen geometry. The following item for ballot is intended as an update to ASTM E647 to loosen the requirement for reporting of relative humidity. The task group felt that users should be permitted to use methodologies other than ASTM E337 for this measurement.
