Several committee members have proposed that the consensus values of the Raman peak positions established in ASTM E1840 (Standard Guide for Raman Shift Standards for Spectrometer Calibration) be revisited. The purpose of the guide is to provide reliable Raman shift peak positions for common chemicals that can be readily obtained at high purity. At the time, no procedures were recommended for spectrometer wavenumber calibration or the estimation of peak positions. Other potential impacts on peak location, such as spectrometer resolution or sample temperature, were not examined. We intend to conduct internal studies at NIST to reexamine these materials (and possibly others) but would like to invite interested parties to submit data or take part in cooperative efforts to reassess the values established in the standard guide as well as reasonable tolerances.
