Rational: The standard washing procedure intended in C117 is manual washing. However, the use of mechanical aggregate washers is becoming more popular. Mechanical washing has been shown to degrade the sample during the washing process, resulting in erroneously higher reported amounts of -#200 in aggregate. The purpose of this ballot is twofold; (1) to allow mechanical washers, and (2) to caution users of mechanical washing apparatuses of degradation that can occur during this automated process. Part of Note 1 is being placed in text thus allowing the use of mechanical washers, other parts of Note 1 are being revised to caution and advise users of degradation. Additionally, section 1.5 is being added to regarding notes and footnotes, except those to tables, are information only.
