Active Standard: A31 - 04(2009)
The Subgroup on Locomotives, of the ASME Boiler & Pressure Vessel Code Committee I on Power Boilers, has requested that the A31 specification, for Grade A, be revised to increase the tensile strength maximum, to 58 000 psi; and to establish a carbon content maximum, of 0.18%. The inability to obtain suitable steel to manufacture A31 Grade A rivets makes it difficult or impossible to complete certain types of boiler repairs or to manufacture new large riveted locomotive boilers. Rivets that are too weak or too strong can lead to poorly installed rivets. Among the problems that poorly installed rivets can cause are leaks, gaps, and weak rivet seams. Also, the Subgroup on Locomotives has also requested that the first word of 3.1.1, ASTM, be revised to the word, Specification; and that a supplementary requirement be provided to make certification mandatory. ASME, when it adopts ASTM A31 as ASME SA-31, can then make the new SR mandatory for SA-31 rivets used in locomotive boilers built to Section I.
