ASTM WK42680

Work Item: ASTM WK42680 - Revision of A370 - 12a Standard Test Methods and Definitions for Mechanical Testing of Steel Products

    (What is a Work Item?)

    Active Standard: A370 - 13

Developed by Subcommittee: A01.13 | Committee A01 | Contact Staff Manager

    1. Rationale

A370 and E23 use the same drawing for the striking edge of Charpy impact test machine. The current tolerance of the corner radius (0.25 mm) of the striker edge is +/- 0.05 mm. Because the tested steel products have shown high ductility, the issue of wear has come to the surface. To comply with the current tolerance, it is necessary to check and/or change the striker frequently. On the other hand, it was shown that the tolerance of corner radius has little effect on test results. See ASTM STP 1248. Based on this information, ASTM E23 was revised in 2012 to give the corner radius as 0.25 mm, - 0.05 mm, + 0.50 mm. See E23-12c. This revision will make the same change in A370.
