    1. Scope

    1.1 This specification addresses both manual and automatically-operated gate systems. 1.2 This specification applies to the entire gate system including gate structure, mounting supports, hardware and, if applicable, gate operator and associated control and accessory equipment, from basic material criteria to installed system performance. 1.3 This specification covers all gate systems utilizing architectural metal infill materials including ornamental pickets, ornamental pales, expanded metal and welded wire mesh. Other architectural metal infill materials may be considered as specific fence material specifications are developed. 1.4 Types of gate systems addressed in this specification include horizontal slide gates, horizontal swing gates, vertical lift gates, vertical pivot gates and overhead pivot gates. Gate types not listed in this specification will be subject to any applicable provisions contained in this specification. 1.5 The values stated in inch-pound units are to be regarded as standard. The values given in parentheses are mathematical conversions to SI units that are provided for information only and are not considered standard.

    Well defined requirements to ensure structurally sound gates capable of repeated cycles of operation are needed for gates other than chain link gates. This standard will address all aspects from adequacy of structural design to reliability of installed system.
