ASTM WK42501

Revision of C1193 - 13 Standard Guide for Use of Joint Sealants

    (What is a Work Item?)

    Active Standard: C1193 - 13

Developed by Subcommittee: C24.10 | Committee C24 | Contact Staff Manager

    WK42501

    1. Rationale

It has come to the committees attention that although ASTM C1193 provides guidance relative to the minimum sealant bead depth at the substrate (bond line), it does not provide guidance relative to the minimum sealant bead depth at a point remote from the substrate, such as the location at the centerline of the sealant bead, for butt type sealant joints. Sealant manufacturers often provide a minimum sealant bead depth in their literature. C1193 should also provide such information because a sealant bead is more prone to failure as the depth of the sealant decreases, and based on tolerances during installation, the sealant bead depth may become unrealistically thin. Additionally, the information provided in Figure 4 of C1193 does not accurately depict the backer rod, and consequently, the sealant bead profile. This figure needs to be revised to more accurately depict actual backer rod and sealant bead profiles.
