This is the follow-up to the previous renewal cycle which deferred major changes in the MgO chemistry specifications in order to get the spec reapproved. The MgO chemistry requirements do not coordinate with technical requirements and the table format has resulted in improper citations. A step change in the Fe2O3 requirement is the most urgent reform, having been severely imposed for limited requirements which have expanded beyond the original intent. Companion adjustments may be considered to harmonize the spec with historically established, technically validated, pragmatic, and practical requirements. Although the spec is not due for routine renewal until 2015, this issue went critical about 2008 as a result of MgO production realities, and is well past urgent status and bordering on emergency. The ballot will include detailed justification information to support the change on legacy, technical, economic, practical, and pragmatic grounds. Much work has been done by E20 members to address/allay potential concerns.
