1. Scope
1.1 This specification covers preblended dry mortar materials as delivered for use in construction of unit masonry structures.
1.2 The values stated in inch/pounds units are to be regarded as the standard.
1.3 The text of this standard refers to notes and footnotes, which provide explanatory material. These notes and footnotes (excluding those in tables and figures) shall not be considered the requirements of the standard.
1.4 This specification includes requirements for component materials, mortar property requirements, and optional bond strength requirements. Compliance with property requirements and optional bond strength requirements are determined by indicated laboratory test methods.
1.5 This standard contains provisions for plant and field sampling of mortar materials, testing is to be performed under laboratory controlled conditions. This specification is not a specification to determine the properties of field prepared mortar.
1.5.1 Preblended dry mortars are manufactured by mixing dried masonry aggregate and cementitious materials comprised of Portland cement and lime, mortar cement, or masonry cement, and conform to Specification C 270. These mortar materials are mixed offsite and are completely preblended, requiring only the addition of water on site.
1.6 The test values obtained under Test Method C 780 are not required to meet the minimum compressive values in accordance with the performance specifications of Table 1 of this standard.
1.7 The following safety hazards caveat pertains only to the test method section of this specification: This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.
