    1. Rationale

    The E05.11.14 task group has expressed a desire to modify this standard to allow for varying vertical positioning of the window within the exterior wall assembly. Currently the standard requires that the sill of the window in the exterior wall assembly be located 30 0.5 in. above the floor of the test room. The proposal is to allow the sill to be located in the range of 30 to 39 0.5 in. above the floor of the test room. The rationale for including the 9 inch range is to account for the varying spandrel heights that occur in buildings. Said another way, by varying the window height, tests assemblies can be made to have dimensions which more closely match the dimensions of real world exterior wall assemblies. As justification for the change data is being included from a test conducted with the window sill located 39 in. above the floor of the test room. The premise is that the fire exposure with the sill at 39 in. above the floor of the test room is substantially similar to the fire exposure in scenarios where the sill is set at 30 in. above the floor of the test room.
