    1. Scope

    This document addresses the principles that concern the measurement of time-related sensory perceptions of multiple attributes and multiple events or exposures. The selection of an appropriate method will depend on the determination of the temporal parameters being studied. Training and/or orientation will be required to assure meaningful results will be obtained. Data collection must encompass a wide range of conditions and temporal rates. Requirements for each method will be clearly explained. The effects of products post-ingestion or post-use of product will be considered, along with adaptation and carry-over effects. Statistical analysis of the data obtained through these methods shall be explored and the alternatives will be clearly discussed. Validity and reliability of each method will be explored through an inter-laboratory study. The document will be a guide to the rationale for selection of appropriate methods to answer a specific case study, comparing and contrasting strengths and limitations of each method. Case studies based upon temporal sensory challenges shall be solicited from group members. Strategies for communicating temporal information about product properties to stakeholders shall be provided.

    The established standard for time intensity only addresses the measurement of a single attribute or stimulus. Temporality is an important differentiator of many products and data regarding temporal properties is essential to guide product development or to measure quality and consistency.
