Work Item: ASTM WK41379 - New Practice for Compaction of Prismatic Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) Test Specimens by Means of the Shear Box Compactor

Developed by Subcommittee: D04.20 | Committee D04 Home | Contact Staff Manager

1. Scope

This standard practice covers the compaction of prismatic specimens of hot mix asphalt (HMA) using the Shear Box Compactor (SBC). This standard also refers to the determination of the uncorrected relative density (i.e., based on geometric volume) of the compacted specimens at each load cycle during the compaction process. Compacted specimens are suitable for volumetric and physical property testing. Various methods are used to compact prismatic samples of hot mix asphalt are in use within the asphalt industry. This standard practice will provide clarity and procedures for the manufacture of these samples using one type of device. Other devices can be used for the same purpose and the sub-committee will strive to provide a standard practice for each of the types of compaction through the support of the equipment manufactures
