1. Rationale

In 2011 the subcommittee expressed concerns that section 1.6 was confusing to the reader. ASTM E1 actually includes three non-mercury thermometers and the wording of section 1.6 makes it sound as if there were none. Information found in Section 5 (Type) will be introduced in the Scope.
