1. Rationale
It has been brought to the attention of the subcommittee that no commercial suppliers of the petroleum distillate solvent specified in 6.1.2 exist. As such, this causes labs not to be in compliance with the method requirements when testing samples that correspond to the prescriptive use of this solvent in Table 1. Since the functional requirement that needs to be met in the method is for labs to use a waterimmiscible solvent-carrier liquid that is miscible in the material being tested, labs should have the option of choosing an appropriate solvent, as long as it meets this requirement. As such, a proposed revision is identified to define the functional requirements that need to be satisfied in 6.1, as well as providing recommendations (i.e., non-mandatory information) on solvent-carrier liquids to use for certain materials in Table 1, rather than making the information in Table 1 as prescriptive requirements as in the current standard. Secondly, because of the problems of identifying commercial suppliers of the petroleum distillate solvent specified in 6.1.2, a proposed revision is identified to allow labs to use solvents that meet the specification requirements in D235.
