(What is a Work Item? / How to Input to a Work Item)

Work Item: ASTM WK40941 - Revision of A143 / A143M - 07 Standard Practice for Safeguarding Against Embrittlement of Hot-Dip Galvanized Structural Steel Products and Procedure for Detecting Embrittlement

Active Standard: A143 / A143M - 07

Developed by Subcommittee: A05.13 | Committee A05 Home | Contact Staff Manager

1. Rationale

There have been some reports of cracks forming at the heat-affected zones of welds. This paragraph attempts to explain the cause of this cracking and to suggest a method of lowering the potential for embrittlement in the heat-affected zones of welds. Proposed Revision to A 143 Technical Contact: Tom Langill, American Galvanizers Association, 720-554-0900x14 Add: 4.5Another area that is sensitive to changes in hardness due to fabrication processes is the heat-affected zone of welds. The heat-affected zones of the welds can become embrittled due to the high residual stress generated during the welding process. For these areas good fabrication technique would be to lower the residual stresses by heating the surrounding area to allow the stress to move away from the heat-affected zone.
