ASTM WK40760

New Specification for Protective Coatings for Cast Iron Pipes and Fittings

    (What is a Work Item?)

Developed by Subcommittee: A04.12 | Committee A04 | Contact Staff Manager

    1. Scope

This specification covers protective coatings for cast iron pipe and fittings used for above ground and below ground service in gravity flow applications. It establishes test methods for chemical resistance, abrasion resistance, surface adhesion and weather resistance of the protective coatings when specified by the purchaser or the design professional. The working group will also investigate rehabilitation of existing cast iron piping using similar methods to those used for relining of sanitary sewers and water supply piping.

Cast iron pipes and fittings are installed above and below ground and when used for gravity service are sometimes exposed to effluent that might require cause an owner or design professional to consider protective coatings. This new standard will establish useful methods of determining which ASTM test methods can be used to determine the suitability of these coatings. Recent requests for suitable methods of rehabilitation of existing cast iron piping and a review of existing ASTM practices for these applications for other piping products indicates that these systems are available but their suitability for use with cast iron DWV products has not been addressed.
