To provide uniform guidelines, interpretations, use and maintenance of the composite reference standards used in ultrasonic testing. This practice guideline covers procedures for the fabrication, use and maintenance of the composite reference standards. The guideline covers a procedure for fabricating composite ultrasonic standard reference samples that are used for checking the performance of ultrasonic testing equipment. Reference composite standards are intended for the standardization and control of the ultrasonic tests of composite structures using ultrasonic waves introduced into the test material either by direct-contact, by the immersion method, by the water jet method or other advanced techniques including laser ultrasonic or resonance test configurations. A guide describes the recommended procedure for checking composite standard samples and includes a section on calibration and a section on the recommended number of reference samples types. Statements concerning procedures are provided without a discussion of the technical background for the preference of the ultrasonic test methodologies. The necessary technical background can be found in Refs:.
