1. Rationale
Section 6.3.3 references the use of mercury in glass thermometers as the referee method in cases of dispute. Subcommitte 8 is in the process of removing all references to mercury in glass thermometers from this Standard Test Method. Furthermore, the manual instrument which utilizes such thermometers is rarely if ever used making it a meaningless referee procedure, as found by polling members of SC8.
