1. SCOPE 1.1 This Standard provides the physical property requirements and test methods to determine these properties for medium density closed cell spray-applied rigid polyurethane foam used as an air barrier material in buildings, whether applied on a building site or in a prefabrication (manufacturing) facility. 1.2 The medium density closed cell spray-applied rigid polyurethane foam shall only be manufactured/produced/installed in accordance with the spray polyurethane foam system manufacturers instructions. Responsibilities of the manufacturer, the contractor and the installer are set out by the manufacturer, any installation standard and any site quality assurance programs. 1.3 The spray polyurethane foam system manufacturer does not actually produce the medium density closed cell spray-applied rigid polyurethane foam material identified by this Standard. What the spray polyurethane foam system manufacturer does produce is a liquid resin component, which when combined with the corresponding polymeric isocyanate on a fixed ratio basis (normally one to one) subsequently produces, upon installation, the material which shall provide the physical properties listed in this Standard. Therefore the requirements set out by the manufacturer for installation, including requirements for the qualification of contractors and installers forms an integral part of the manufacturing process for the finished product. Only when the product is produced on site by the installation process set out by the manufacturer and any installation standard is the material able to meet the requirements of this Standard. 1.4 Spray polyurethane foam used in thermal insulation applications are not covered by this standard as they are covered by C 1029, spray polyurethane foam used in roofing applications are not covered by this standard as they are covered by D 7425 and sealant foams are not covered by this standard as they are covered by C 1620. 1.5 The test methods listed in this Standard are used to determine the values for the physical properties. These physical property values are intended for use in specifications, product evaluations and quality control. They are not intended to predict end-use product performance. 1.6 The medium density closed cell spray-applied rigid polyurethane foam shall not be used when the continuous service temperature of the substrate is outside the range of 60 C to + 80 C. 1.7 Only metric SI units of measurement are used in this Standard. If a value for measurement is followed by a value in other units in parentheses, the second value is approximate. The first stated value is the requirement. 1.8 The testing and evaluation of a product against this Standard may require the use of materials and/or equipment that could be hazardous. This document does not purport to address all the safety aspects associated with its use. Currently there is no standard for spray polyurethane foam when it is used as a air barrier material. This standard is required to determine quality control and is critical as part of a site quality assurance program.
