    New Test Methods for Modulus and Damping of Soils by Free-Free Resonant-Column Methods

    1. Scope

    The proposed standard will describe use of the resonant column test method using the free-free apparatus. Transfer function methods for experimental measurement and theoretical analysis will also be detailed.

    The previous Standard (D4015-07: Standard Test Methods for Modulus and Damping of Soils by Resonant-Column Method) is currently under revision. The Working Group agreed to simplify D4015-07 by removing details related to the free-free apparatus and moving them to the proposed new Standard. The revision of D4015-07 will also incorporate new experimental and theoretical transfer function techniques for the fixed-free device. The Standard proposed herein will describe measurement and analysis by the transfer function approach for the free-free device, which is sufficiently different from that of the fixed-free device to warrant a separate Standard. The new standard will be used by researchers, government, and professionals who need to perform laboratory resonant column tests with a free-free device to characterize modulus and damping of soils as a function of various soil parameters.
