ASTM WK40501

(What is a Work Item? / How to Input to a Work Item)

Work Item: ASTM WK40501 - Revision of D3939 / D3939M - 11 Standard Test Method for Snagging Resistance of Fabrics (Mace)

Active Standard: D3939 / D3939M - 13

Developed by Subcommittee: D13.59 | Committee D13 Home | Contact Staff Manager

1. Rationale

In test methods, D3939, D5362, and D5430, there was a specification for using a particular fluorescent bulb with a specific color temperature as a light source for the visual grading of fabric samples. This specification was questioned by Subcommittee D13.59. Since there was no compelling evidence to the contrary, a change in the wording of the specification of the light source to eliminate the nature of the light bulb and its color temperature was balloted. One subcommittee member expressed a negative concerning the change and insisted that the color temperature was critical. We initiated a study to test this hypothesis by assembling a series of fabric samples, which had been subjected to snagging, and several operators graded these samples using 6 different light sources. Since the analysis by ILS (#690)confirms the data analysis performed by James Knopp, which was presented in the June 2012 committee meeting, there is no effect of the nature of the light source and its color temperature on the ability to grade fabric samples.
