(What is a Work Item? / How to Input to a Work Item)

Work Item: ASTM WK40419 - New Test Methods for Performance evaluation of additive manufacturing systems through measurement of a manufactured test piece.

Developed by Subcommittee: F42.01 | Committee F42 Home | Contact Staff Manager

1. Scope

This test method covers the general description of a benchmarking test piece along with quantitative and qualitative measurements to be taken on the benchmarking test piece to assess the performance of additive manufacturing (AM) systems. The benchmarking test piece is primarily used to quantitatively assess the geometric performance of an AM system. Additional performance characteristics that can be determined using the test piece are discussed in Annex A2 A5. Data from measurements described in this test method are used to assess the performance of an AM system, especially in comparison with similar data from other systems. Geometric performance of an AM system is the primary characterization obtained using this test method. The test piece described in this test method can act as an acceptance piece for a contract between a buyer and seller of an AM system. The test piece can also be used for periodic performance assessment of an AM system. Data from measurements described in this test method can be used to determine quantities used for machine compensation (see Annex A2 for further discussion). Non-destructive evaluation (NDE) can be performed on the benchmarking test piece to help ascertain physical properties of parts manufactured using the chosen process parameters on the AM system under investigation (see Annex A3 for further discussion). Mechanical testing specimens can be extracted from the benchmarking test piece described in this test method to help determine mechanical properties of parts manufactured using the AM system under investigation.
