In December 2009 the Executive Committee of C 15 decided a statement should be developed that does not endorse the use of C 15 standards for masonry units to validate new products made from materials that are not within the materials and manufacture limits defined for each standard. The statement encouraged proponents of new masonry units to provide appropriate physical property requirements and performance indicators of their products for new standards. It was recommended that the requirements must be included in the individual standards. As a result C216 and C652 were recently modified and now C902 is undergoing a similar revision. Specifications for existing masonry units include requirements that are explicit, such as minimum compressive strength, stipulated by limitations on constituent materials and dimensional properties. They do not include implicit properties of the units. For units produced using traditional materials and methods, these implicit properties have been proven through many years of experience. When accepting units of non-traditional materials it is important that those units demonstrate long-term performance implied by the explicit requirements, and that the units meet the implicit properties. To emphasize this point, an addition has been drafted for inclusion into the scope of ASTM C 902. A similar item for C216 and C652 was approved previously. The language here is the same as in those standards.
